I read the excerpt for Joe Peace in the 2008 Amazon Breakthrough Novel Awards contest and it’s taken me four years to finally read the whole story. I knew I’d have to set the evening aside when I got Joe Peace in my hot little hands. I was right and better yet, I was not disappointed.
Joe Peace takes place in pre-tech boom Austin, Texas, a place where rednecks and hippies exist in peace. It’s a city that can hold its own even when the protagonist is a former good cop gone druglord.
Now, how in the heck did that happen? And why is Joe’s strongest enforcer suddenly dead? Best yet, when a young girl who is the spitting image of the deceased love of Joe’s life shows up, he wants to know – who’s the daddy – because he knows it’s not him.
Engaging characters, a setting that holds its own spell over readers, and burning questions are the stuff that makes up good crime noir. Add to that author Kerry Dunn’s irresistible wit and way with words and you’ve got a book that can proudly share space with the likes of James Lee Burke, Elmore Leonard, and Dennis Lehane.
If you enjoy a good mystery with more twists than a nest of rattlesnakes stuck in an icebox, you’re going to love Joe Peace.
